Technical, Environmental and Economic Assessment of Medium Deep Borehole Thermal Energy Storage Systems.

Short summary of dissertation

Seasonal thermal energy storage in medium deep borehole heat exchangers is a very promising technology for increasing the share of solar thermal energy in district heating grids. However, medium deep borehole thermal energy storage systems (MD-BTES) have not been put into practice, yet. Consequently, their general operational behavior in combination with other technologies is unknown. Furthermore, the construction of MD-BTES is accompanied by environmental burdens and large investments. Its contribution to the saving of greenhouse gas emissions as well as the financial benefit induced by such storages is debatable, especially when compared against combined heat and power technology.

The dissertation examines the general suitability of MD-BTES systems for seasonal heat storage. Furthermore, it assesses the environmental and economic impacts of integrating MD-BTES systems into different district heating concepts.
